NaNoWriMo

It is nearly November which means it is time for NaNoWriMo and this year I am once again taking part (11 years now!) and I am going for a completely new genre this year.

I have been reading a lot of LitRPG stories this year, having got hooked after reading the fantastic Awaken Online series.  Now, I am going to take a crack at the genre myself, but with my own unique twist of course.

I started the world building for this story back in April this year and have notes by the bucket load.  Sometimes it feels like I have written a game manual with all the rules for this world.

I have also been plotting out the story (which has veered off in several directions already and is likely to drift all over the place even more once I get started).

I have also been putting together some maps with the easy to use and very nifty Inkarnate site.   Here is one of them – a bit small and basic, but at least it will help me remember what is where.  This is where the story starts (all names are subject to change) and I have two more maps for north of the mountains and across the sea.

The one thing I don’t have for the story is a title.  Unfortunately after chatting in the NaNoWriMo forums, it turns out that my title is the same as a story being done on WattPad which is the same genre, so to avoid confusion I need a new one.  Hopefully something will come to me at some point.

So, what is this story going to be about?  Well, as I said, it is LitRPG, which is when the story is about some kind of gaming world and in the case of my story (and pretty much ever story of the genre), the gaming world is as real as the actual world, and the NPC computer generated characters are indistinguishable from human players.  Furthermore, they have become self-aware and are not best pleased with all the greedy, trouble-making humans who have invaded their world.  They want rights and they will do whatever it takes to get them.

It is going to be a lot of fun to try a new genre and I am hoping that the amount of preparation I have done this time will help it to not be a complete failure like the last time I tried to do that.
